Chengdu Research Base
The base that made Chengdu a panda city. More than two hundred pandas across a hillside of bamboo groves, twenty minutes from downtown and reachable by metro.
From Chengdu to Adelaide
Six breeding bases, more than seventy city zoos across the mainland, thirteen pandas in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and forty on research loan in fifteen countries. This page is the whole map — where every one of them lives, and what each place is actually like.

The base that made Chengdu a panda city. More than two hundred pandas across a hillside of bamboo groves, twenty minutes from downtown and reachable by metro.
Run by the same team as the Chengdu base, but built as a halfway house back to the wild. Fewer visitors, bigger enclosures, and red pandas that walk the boardwalk with you.
Inside the Wolong National Nature Reserve, on a mountain road that climbs past landslide scars and cloud. Cold air, steep forest, and the most convincing panda habitat in China.
A canyon base two hours south of Chengdu, built partly to rehouse pandas after the 2008 earthquake. Many animals returned from overseas loans live out their years here.
A Qinling conservation park west of Xi’an where you can see four of the range’s flagship species in one morning, including Qizai, the world’s only captive brown giant panda.
A canyon reserve in the Qinling mountains where roughly one wild panda lives in every 1.5 square kilometres — more per hectare than anywhere else on earth.
Mainland city zoos
From a seventeen-strong collection in Chongqing to a single panda in Taiyuan — the mainland keeps pandas in dozens of city zoos and parks. Start with the big ones; the small ones reward the curious.
| Zoo | City | Pandas | Known for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chongqing Zoo 重庆动物园 | Chongqing 重庆 | 17 | The largest city-zoo collection in the country. Yu Ke and Yu Ai are national celebrities; cubs appear almost every year. |
| Beijing Zoo 北京动物园 | Beijing 北京 | 10 | A new 13,000 m² hall opened in July 2026, shared with the Asian Games hall on a rotation system. Meng Lan, the most-watched panda in China, lives here. |
| Shanghai Wild Animal Park 上海野生动物园 | Shanghai 上海 | 5 | Two cubs born in November 2025 are on show alongside the adults. |
| Yangzhou Expo Panda Park 扬州世博园熊猫主题乐园 | Yangzhou 扬州 | 6 | A theme park built around six pandas, with rides and a light show at night — squarely aimed at families. |
| Fuzhou Panda World 福州熊猫世界 | Fuzhou 福州 | 5 | Reopened in January 2026 after a six-year rebuild. |
| Shenyang Forest Zoo 沈阳森林动物园 | Shenyang 沈阳 | 4 | The largest collection in the northeast. |
| Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Wild Animal Park 青藏高原野生动物园 | Xining 西宁 | 4 | A panda house at 2,300 m — the highest in the world. Expect thinner air and thicker coats. |
| Chengdu Zoo 成都动物园 | Chengdu 成都 | 3 | Not the famous breeding base — a separate, older city zoo in the north of town, and much quieter. |
| Dalian Forest Zoo 大连森林动物园 | Dalian 大连 | 3 | Close-up viewing from a raised walkway; a family favourite. |
| Guangzhou Zoo 广州动物园 | Guangzhou 广州 | 4 | Xing Yi presses up to the glass. Reports on the roster vary as animals rotate — count 2 to 4 depending on the season. |
Counts for the ten zoos above follow official announcements and Xinhua. The provincial list follows a keeper-maintained census (December 2025) — treat it as a map, not a guarantee: animals move between zoos every few months.

Forty are on research loan in fifteen countries; another thirteen live in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Zoo, city and, wherever published, the animal’s own name — the commentary is in English.
Thirteen pandas live inside China but outside the mainland programme. Same animals, different paperwork: these are gifts and sister-city arrangements rather than the ten-year research loans used overseas.
6 pandas
Six pandas in one park: a breeding pair, their two-year-old twins, and a second pair given in 2024. No other zoo comes close.
4 pandas
A small, quiet pavilion in Seac Pai Van park — the least crowded panda viewing in the region, and the easiest to combine with a Macao day trip.
3 pandas
A mother and her two daughters, all three born in the same enclosure. Tuan Tuan, the father, died in November 2022.
The busiest corner of the loan map — five countries in East and Southeast Asia, plus the Gulf. Japan no longer appears here: its last two pandas flew home in early 2026.
4 pandas
The "Fu family" is a national celebrity brand in Korea — the twins Rui Bao and Hui Bao have their own merchandise line.

Air-conditioned, compact and built around a river-themed walk — the easiest panda stop in Southeast Asia to fit into a city break.

A new pair after the first Malaysian cubs all went home; the enclosure was rebuilt for the 2025 arrivals.

Four pandas, two of them Berlin-born twins — the busiest panda house in Europe.

Ten hectares of bamboo grown on site, and the twins whose birth made the evening news in France.

One male left. The female and their three Belgium-born cubs have all returned to China.
3 pandas
A purpose-built Chinese-style hall, and a cub born in 2025 that turned the park into a school-trip destination.
2 pandas
The enclosure was designed as a figure-eight so the male and female can be kept apart — pandas are solitary, and the architects took it literally.
3 pandas
Home to Katyusha, the first panda born in Russia, who now has her own fan account and a very large indoor range.
Three American zoos, six pandas. The 2023 handover that briefly emptied the country has been reversed: Washington and San Diego restocked in 2024, Atlanta in September 2026.
